Floating Garden Observatory is a roof observatory, situated at the top floor of Umeda Sky Building in Osaka, Japan. Two towers interconnect at the top floors, where the Observatory is situated. Umeda Sky Building is Osaka’s leading landmark and is one of the most visited places among tourists.
Umeda Sky Building was designed by HARA Hiroshi, a Japanese architect and author on architecture, and its construction completed in 1993. Hara also designed Kyoto Station and Sapporo Dorm in Hokkaido.
Visitors reach to the 38th floor by taking a direct elevator and by an escalator to the 40th top floor. Getting to the top is really exciting!
Feel free to stand out at the top floor in an open air, where visitors can observe a 360 degree magnificent city landscapes. Aspire and feel the dynamics of the city. After a sunset, lights start illuminating out of the skyscraper glamorously. Highways intersect between the buildings. Capture beautiful golden stream in the image.
Floating Garden Observatory is one of the few places around the world. The images of night landscape can be perfectly well taken because there is no window in front. That is why I visit the Observatory often. A use of a tripod is also allowed. Security officers are standing, so visitors and photographers can feel safe and relaxed while they stay there. Umeda Sky Building is the place anyone must visit for travel photography in Japan.
On my first night landscape photography
I received a photography assignment job and cover Osaka in2 013. It was my first proper job as a travel photographer.
I received a shooting permission from Umeda Sky Building. The day and the time were fixed. I just went there although I did not have much confidence to photograph night landscapes.
I arrived at Umeda Sky Building, got a permission to enter and positioned my tripod at the top floor. I tried to take the images of a night landscape, but it did not work. Night shooting needs a certain technique.
Shortly after someone stood next to me. He carried a massive tripod, with a Nikon D4 and a D800. He was teaching how to photograph nigh landscape to a person next to him. Obviously he is a professional photographer. He asked me how things were going. I showed him the images I took. He smiled at me and told me how to change a camera setting and shoot. How lucky I was!
When we are seriously working on something important and significant to us, there is always a support out of nowhere. I could complete my night landscape photography work. I was thankful to him on that night!
I was honest and said to him that I was under an assignment on that night. And yet, I totally forgot that I was working there. Everything disappeared out of my mind. I was focused and became one with everything around me. A sound of my camera shutter kept going. I carried on taking the images of the night landscape. It was such a beautiful night!
Floating Garden Observatory is a place I would recommend any travelers to visit while they stay in Osaka. I have visited the Floating Garden Observatory at day and night quite sometimes and met many photographers from every corner of the world. If you are a serious photographer, it is the place you must go. The Observatory is a real heaven for photographers!
A winter season would be better to visit there due to a clear air and less people. It would be freezing but I will go again. Please do not disturb loving couples with your tripod. It is a highly romantic place too.
